This report examines the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in addressing the growing challenge of online disinformation. It provides an in-depth examination of AI-driven media verification techniques, focusing on automated fact-checking, text analysis, and detecting visual and multimodal disinformation, including deepfakes. Highlighting both the potential and limitations of AI technologies, the report outlines technical advances, ethical considerations, and challenges related to cultural sensitivity, bias mitigation, and scalability. As part of the MedDMO initiative, this work aims to guide policymakers, fact-checkers, and technologists in fostering reliable and transparent information ecosystems, underscoring the critical role of AI in safeguarding democracy and public trust in the digital age.
