On October 2nd, 2024, the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) hosted a critical panel in Warsaw titled “Preserving Democracy, Fighting Disinformation: AI-Generated Disinformation in the Context of Elections.”
This side event, part of the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, brought together experts, including Neville Borg of MedDMO and the Times of Malta, to discuss the growing threat posed by AI-generated disinformation.
Borg, alongside other panelists, highlighted the dangers AI-driven tools pose to electoral integrity, media trust, and societal cohesion. The conversation focused on the rapidly evolving digital landscape, where AI tools, such as deepfakes, enable the spread of false narratives at an unprecedented scale.
The panel emphasized the need for international collaboration to combat disinformation, stressing that access to accurate and diverse information is critical for preserving democracy in election years.
MedDMO’s work on raising awareness and countering disinformation was spotlighted as an essential part of the broader global effort to maintain fair competition and safeguard public trust in democratic institutions.
With elections at risk of manipulation by AI-generated content, the discussion underscored the urgent need for new strategies to protect the integrity of democratic processes.
