EDMO Brief: Disinformation patterns observed in November

The November fact-checking brief of EDMO points to a clear shift in how disinformation is being produced and shared. Pro-Russian and xenophobic narratives are increasingly amplified through generative AI, making false content easier to produce, quicker to spread, and often more convincing.

Once again, the war in Ukraine and migration were the most targeted topics. Disinformation related to the war in Ukraine increased by four percentage points, likely linked to renewed media attention and discussions around possible peace talks. At the same time, disinformation targeting migrants rose by one percentage point, marking the fourth month in a row of steady growth.

What stands out, however, is not only the volume of false claims but also their form. AI-generated content is increasingly used to create parallel realities that reinforce propaganda and extremist messaging, making misleading narratives harder to identify at first glance. This trend places growing pressure on fact-checkers and highlights the importance of coordinated responses across Europe.
