Online disinformation and ways to tackle it were the focus of the second open event of MedDMO, which took place on February 26 at the Information Center – “Stelios Ioannou” Library of the University of Cyprus, in Nicosia.
With the presence of people from both academia and the media, but of course with the active participation of the student community, representatives of the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory analyzed the contemporary challenges faced by those working to combat fake news.
All the presentations clearly highlighted the deep need to strengthen the digital resilience of citizens, while at the same time promoting collaborative news verification practices and the importance of education in addressing the phenomenon of disinformation.
The event was welcomed by the Dean of the School of Social and Educational Sciences of the University of Cyprus, Professor Antonis Ellinas, the President of the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Cyprus, Professor Philemon Bandimaroudis, the President of the Cyprus Editors’ Union, George Frangos, as well as the Deputy Director of News of the Cyprus News Agency, Petros Konstantinou.
The event concluded with a discussion and questions from the audience, which confirmed the strong interest in the issues of correctness of information in the digital world and the need for continuous education about them.
