Global developments drive disinformation across Europe

The EDMO monthly brief for January 2026 shows that international political crises continue to play a key role in shaping disinformation across Europe.

During the reporting period, more than 1,600 cases of false or misleading content were recorded, with most of them targeting the European Union, followed by narratives related to Ukraine and migration.

Developments in the United States, Venezuela, Greenland and Iran contributed to the spread of multimedia content, including videos and images containing misleading or false claims. In many cases, this content was shared out of context or supported by the use of artificial intelligence.

Notably, the findings show that AI-generated or manipulated content reached a new peak, accounting for one in five cases.

Overall, the report highlights that disinformation closely follows current affairs, drawing on global events and new technologies to increase its reach and impact.
