University of Cyprus: Students Learn About Disinformation and Verification

An educational workshop entitled “Disinformation and Verification Practices” was held on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, at the University of Cyprus (UCY) in Nicosia. The workshop was conducted by the Journalism Research Laboratory (J-Lab) of the Department of Social and Political Sciences and Researcher Maria Noti.

The workshop brought together 40 students from the third grade of lower secondary school (Gymnasium) and the first and second grades of upper secondary school (Lyceum), aged 14 to 18, as part of the University of Cyprus Summer Academies 2026 for secondary school students.

During the workshop, participants were introduced to the activities and objectives of the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory (MedDMO) and explored the phenomenon of disinformation and its impact on today’s digital information environment. Through interactive presentations, educational quizzes and open discussions, students had the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas and become familiar with practical verification methods used to assess the reliability of digital content.

The workshop aimed to strengthen students’ critical thinking and media literacy skills by encouraging them to evaluate information carefully before sharing or acting upon it.
