Malta 2026 General Election Watch: Post-Vote Analysis

Malta is no stranger to political disinformation. As a country dominated by the two larger parties – the Labour Party (Partit Laburista) and Nationalist Party (Partit Nazzjonalista) – polarisation and rivalry fuel false and misleading narratives directed at maintaining power. In the run up to an election, this is only more evident.

On 27th April 2026, Malta’s prime minister Robert Abela announced a snap general election for 30th May, nine months before his administration’s term was due to be up. The Labour Party secured its fourth consecutive term in government, though the gap between it and the opposition Nationalist Party has significantly narrowed in a very short span of time.

This report looks back on what happened before, during and after the election in terms of disinformation, campaign tactics in the digital environment, and related issues.
