A clear rise in migration-related disinformation narratives was recorded by the European Digital Media Observatory in August, with related reports accounting for 9% of the total, up from 7% in July.
This percentage is the highest that has been recorded in this topic since EDMO’s launch.
The most common claims are those that target immigrants, presenting them, as a whole, as criminals, opposed to Western values or as being favored by local governments and the EU compared to the citizens of the respective states.
Beyond these claims, however, a new wave of false claims is seemingly taking advantage of dramatic events in various countries to blame migrants for the deaths that were caused.
Misinformation related to the coronavirus also increased in the month of August.
