Anonymous third-party paid political advertising in the Cyprus 2026 parliamentary elections

Today we are publishing a new analysis examining anonymous third-party political advertising during the 2026 Cyprus Parliamentary Elections.

The report documents five separate anonymous advertising operations identified through systematic monitoring of paid political content across social media platforms. Together, these operations accounted for more than 450 political advertisements and targeted voters during the final weeks of the election campaign.

Our findings highlight several recurring patterns:

  • Anonymous or pseudonymous advertisers were able to run political campaigns without disclosing their identity.
  • Multiple operations exhibited indicators of coordinated activity, including cross-platform campaigns, duplicate account structures, and sequential account replacement following enforcement actions.
  • Platform enforcement was largely reactive, often occurring only after advertisements had already reached substantial audiences.
  • One operation distributed fabricated opinion polling data in the days immediately preceding the election, raising important questions about electoral transparency and information integrity.

The analysis explores how these activities interact with the EU’s political advertising transparency framework (TTPA), the Digital Services Act (DSA), and national electoral law. It also provides recommendations for regulators, platforms, and future election-monitoring efforts.

As political communication increasingly moves online, transparency about who is attempting to influence voters becomes essential for democratic accountability.

This work was conducted within the MedDMO project and contributes to broader efforts to strengthen election integrity, platform transparency, and evidence-based policymaking across Europe.
